Marcy Morris is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, writer and teaching artist whose visual work spans portrait painting, live sketching, wearable art, creative movement, and qigong. Inspired by people, nature, music, and the energy of community, her work explores human connection through vibrant color, expressive motion, and storytelling. Her artistic practice moves fluidly between representational, illustrative, and whimsical forms, capturing the spirit and emotion of the people and places around her.

Born in Miami, Florida, adopted and raised in Wayne, New Jersey, Marcy discovered her love for the arts at an early age. Encouraged by her parents, she spent her childhood exploring visual art and dance. As a high school student, she attended summer programs at Parsons School of Design and Rhode Island School of Design. Marcy attended Syracuse University, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in interdisciplinary studies in 1988, combining painting, dance, and fibers. In 1996, she received her Pennsylvania Art Teacher Certification from Moore College of Art.

Community remains at the heart of Marcy’s creative practice. As a teaching artist, she works with children and families in public schools, art centers, and community spaces, including Artwell in Philadelphia, and Kingsway Learning Center in Marlton, New Jersey. The early foundation of her career began at the Village of Arts and Humanities in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Public Schools, Chester Public Schools, and the Alfred Deshong Museum in Chester, Pennsylvania. Her experiences as an educator have shaped the way she creates, inspiring her to tune into people's stories, create together, and capture life’s moments through art.

Marcy is especially drawn to creating from life and capturing facial expressions, gestures, posture, and movement from neighborhood scenes of children playing, live music and dance performances, nature, cityscape and beachscapes. Watercolor has become an expansive medium in her artistic practice because of its freedom, fluidity, and ability to bring color and energy to life.

Marcy uses a variety of acrylic mediums to enhance texture and rhythm. Her portraits and paintings of performers and jazz scenes capture the spirit and essence of the atmosphere. Each artwork begins as a gesture in graphite, ink, markers, charcoal or pastel, using photo reference or live subject matter. Her mixed media collages are imaginative and theme based, applying upcycled papers and paints, adding dimension and illusion. Marcy also creates paintings in oils, where the finest of details are achieved with smooth brush strokes that allows the glow of the medium to be experienced in depth and luminosity.

As a poet and writer, Marcy connects and shares her personal, communal and political perspective as a feminist and activist. Tapping into her whimsy and spirit she allows the voices of her personalities to shine boldly and bravely. She loves writing in her journals at local cafes and comfort spaces and performing at open mics in Philly and New Jersey. Like Marcy’s paintings, her poetry embraces themes of diversity, unity, equality, relationships and vital life moments.

Marcy brings together painting, drawing, clothing design, poetry, teaching, qigong, and dance as interconnected parts of her creative practice. She sees art as a bridge between people and communities, creating space for expression, understanding, joy, and healing. Whether capturing a musician in motion, painting a portrait, exploring nature, or creating alongside community, Marcy’s work celebrates individuality while illuminating the shared humanity that connects us all.
