Painted in 2019. Mixed Media on Canvas | Acrylic, Magazine Pages.

Sometime in 1991 or 1992, I attended one of Angélique Kidjo’s performances at the Chestnut Cabaret in West Philly celebrating her newly released album Logozo. Her voice, beauty and presence deeply enlightened my soul. I distinctly remember a moment when she closed her eyes; I felt the layers of her emotions emanate though my entire being.

This portrait of Angelique Kidjo is my homage to her enduring gift of voice and dance. Kidjo’s Batonga Foundation supports over 5000 women and adolescent girls ages 14 to 30. The foundation reaches out to more than 7000 women and girls across Africa, including those in her home country of Benin. Angelique Kidjo continues to perform worldwide illuminating Black women and women of color reaching across cultures, races, identities and cultures to UNIFY.
