Painted in 2011. | Acrylic on canvas
Inspired by a vision of teens becoming the creative leaders of the future. Hold My Hand invokes imagery of afterschool homework, writing poetry with a partner, sharing visions together, and a young love against a cityscape. The interracial teens trust each other; bonded by a focused vision. Their bodies are grounded by connecting to the pavement; comfortably taking up space with pride in living in the city as young Black and Latin classmates with the potential of love.
At the time when I painted Hold My Hand, my son, Brandon Morris, was 11 years old. I envisioned the boy to be visually similar to him. The girl was inspired by his babyhood family friend Sarah, a dancer. Both are of mixed race and cultural backgrounds.
